Report

Report:Nick W led Bude 2s into battle against a dangerous Bodmin side tonight, and brought home the honours in fine style to make it 3 wins out of 4 matches under his captaincy.

First up for Bude was Tony at 4 vs the tenacious and deceptively quick Paul for the visitors. I didn’t see the match but by all accounts it was hard-fought and very close for the first 3 games, before Tony asserted his dominance in the 4th. As a testament to his alpha credentials, by the end even the sweat on his shirt had assumed the shape of a swollen cock (which Mike has kindly uploaded onto the Cornwall Squash Facebook page).

Meanwhile Gary took on Martin at 3, and delivered a tactical masterclass so effectively that he barely broke out of a walk - just the way he likes it, in fact. He mixed power, holds and even a flash or two of reverse-angled brilliance to keep the big farmer guessing, and chalked up an emphatic 3-0 win. To his credit, he even managed to save his smug comments until the bar afterwards, like a true sporting pro.

My game with Mike at 2 was something of an oddity as we both started dozily before taking it to the mat in the 1st. It still didn’t feel to me as if Mike had truly settled, though, so clearly I looked to take full advantage, and I managed to establish a 2-0 lead. Mike woke up in the 3rd and started hitting with greater precision, and this continued into the 4th as I gave myself a much-needed breather. The 5th set decider hinged on a handful of points, and an injury-stricken Mike tipped the scales on the error count, allowing me to take an unexpected but very welcome win.

Match of the night has to go to Nick, who faced fit and hard-hitting youngster Will. Of the two, Will had the better technique, while Nick adopted his usual approach of running around like an eager but slightly simple spaniel. However, he also played some superb winners and tight lengths, keeping Will under pressure at the back of the court and forcing up his error rate - which ultimately proved decisive. A very well-earned 3-2 win by the captain, and a solid result all round for Bude.

Good to see the Bodmin boys, as ever, and looking forward to the return match.
