Report

Report:A strong finish to the season for Bude, who benefitted from a weaker Truro side than we faced in the first leg.

Katrina was apparently still suffering the after-effects of partying on Jonny B’s birthday, so her movement around court was not all that it normally is. She still pulled out some tidy shots, but there was no Hurricane Katrina on this occasion. Tony obviously took full advantage, strategically imposing his bulk between his opponent and the ball, and ran out a comfortable winner in 4.

I faced The Master at 3, where my biggest problem was working out how to serve to the chirpy old-timer without getting chopped from any and every angle. In a match that was more chess than squash, I just about found enough variation to drag it over the line in 3.

At 2, Robin out-Jonnyed Jonny on speed and fitness while playing some patient, disciplined squash to take the first game comfortably. This is Robin we’re talking about, though, so, while he eventually took the match 3-0, the second and third games were far closer as Jonny found his rhythm and Robin’s focus wandered around like a stoned Forrest Gump. We love him, though, and he won, so we’ll let him off.

Bude’s run of victories came to an end at the top of the order, where Chris lost to Henry’s very tidy brand of squash. It looked at first like it was going to be a demolition as Henry strolled to a 7-0 lead, but Chris dug in and even managed to take a tight third game. The effort left him with little in the tank, however, and his frustration with his own lack of fitness was evident as he raged at himself “run, fatty, run”. Fatty couldn’t run any more, though, and Henry took a well-deserved win.

Thanks to Truro for making the trek to Bude, and always entertaining to hear Dave taking the piss out of his own team-mates in the bar afterwards. Looking forward to the Spring half already.
