Report: | In their hunt for promotion, Newquay fielded a strong team for their visit to Bude, but were blown away by a scintillating home side who rose magnificently to the occasion.
Only kidding.
The first three matches saw Bude underperform against superior opponents. Tony struggled against Harry, who was easily young enough to be his son and who hit the ball like it owed him money. Fair play to the Newquay lad, who went straight out for a ciggie after his victory.
Robin and I didn’t really get into our matches, but at best that might have affected the game scores, not the results. Darren was too consistent for Robin, while Milo and I might have been quite well matched if he weren’t much younger and quicker. Enjoyable and played in good spirits, but the outcome never looked much in doubt.
The stand-out performance of the night - of the season, in fact, for Bude 1 - was Chris taking the fight to Matt at 1 and impossibly snatching a game. Chris was blowing after 3 points in the first, while Matt looked like he was participating in a fairly relaxed training exercise. The Bude captain kept plugging on, mixing dogged retrieval with unorthodox winners to take the second, before Matt closed out the next two games comfortably - although the Newquay captain looked like he’d been in a game by the end. Fantastic effort. Considering the Grand Canyon sized gulf in class and fitness, this should surely go down as a moral victory for Bude, but I can’t find a way for the system to accept this…
Well played Newquay, and good luck keeping the Falmouth boys in their place :)
