Report: | Bude faced a depleted Truro 5 side, who made the journey with only 3 players tonight.
First up were the number 1s, as Gerrit was the first of the Truro contingent arrive. Chris edged a slugfest of a first game that went right to the wire, but then suffered an uncharacteristic loss of focus and confidence, which allowed Gerrit to make short work of the next two games. The fourth was more competitive, but the Truro man sealed the win as Chris struggled for consistency. It’s always a proper battle between these two, but this time it was the ever-sporting Gerrit who was the better man on the night.
Next up was the grudge match we’d all been waiting for: Gary vs Adam. These two have something of a history and appear to have devised an entirely new sport: pantosquash. Amid gruelling rallies of up to three or even four shots, they entertained the crowd with ever more imaginative let appeals while gently assaulting each other between points. Adam took the first game, but in so doing awoke the Beast from the North East. Gary has previously been mocked as being the laziest man in Cornwall squash. And rightly so, as he typically moves with all the dynamism of an Easter Island statue. But not tonight. He met Adam’s power with a deft touch game and nimble feet, gliding around the court like a young gazelle. Credit to Adam, who defied physics to keep running right to the end, but the laughing Geordie would not be denied and took the win 3-1.
The final game saw me take on an unknown (to me) quantity in Olly. I’m beginning to suspect that some at Truro find it entertaining to pit me against marathon runners and tireless youngsters (I might be wrong but I sense the dark hand of Matthew at work…). Sure enough, Olly’s squash was a bit green, but he retrieved like a demon and it felt as if I had to win every point three times over. I prevailed in the end but I had to sweat. Not funny.
Brief but enjoyable sojourn to the bar for pizza and beer afterwards, and smiles all round. Cheers all. |
