Report: | Bude hosted division favourites Falmouth 2 tonight in a bruising encounter that, on paper, had only one winner. Bude were, after all, without their talismanic colossus as Mason had pulled a hamstring beating Petey K in Truro last week. Slightly shamefully, we were hoping that Falmouth might field an even more depleted side but they turned up in force.
Stepping in for Bude at 4 was grizzled old silverback Tony Saxton, who faced Neil Jenkin for the visitors. Tony must have been giving his opponent about 25 years, but it didn’t show for the first few games. The Bude veteran stuck to his task with characteristic tenacity, and pumped the air without a hint of shame after spamming a winner off the frame to level the match 2-2. As always, he gave his all and more, but Neil stayed focused and used pace and precision to overpower a fading Tony in the decider.
Meanwhile, I had faced longstanding rival Alex on the other court. We’ve played each other many times over the years, and from memory he dished me a bit of a drubbing last time in Falmouth, so I kind of owed him one. It had been a while, and I think he’d maybe forgotten some of my more irritating shots. In the event, I was able to dictate the pace and find enough unlikely winners to see it out 3-0. True to form, he was all sportsmanship in the bar afterwards but I suspect I’ll have a target on my back next time we meet. Looking forward to it tbh.
Robin played at 2, having started the season strongly. He raced to a 2-0 lead over Huw in an entertaining tie, with both players showing a mix of fitness and skill. At this point, Bude were looking good for the upset, but Huw actually kept his head and dug in, while Robin seemed to ease off - not much, in fairness, but enough to allow his opponent to gather himself and counter-attack. All credit to Huw for clawing it back to take the win 3-2.
Finally, Chris stepped on court to face a Division 1 moonlighter in the form of Matt ‘The Machine’ Tamblyn. Matt was the slower to start, but calmly reeled Chris in to take the first. The second was a massacre. A hugely entertaining massacre. Chris avoided the bagel, although we’re still not sure how. Incredibly, contrary little sausage that he is, his utter demolition in the second seemed to give him another lease of life and, aided by a higher mistake count from Matt (boredom?), he clung on with jaw-dropping obstinacy to edge the third. That was it though, and the tank was empty. Matt cruised the fourth game to seal a well-deserved win for Falmouth.
Well played all, great to see you, and thanks for draining the club bar. Again :)
