Report: | An excellent night of squash in Bude. The home team knew they'd have a fight on their hands against the rapidly improving youngsters from Truro, and so it proved for much of the evening.
First up on the glassback was the 4th string match, Gary vs Joe. The 3-0 result in Gary's favour does not entirely reflect the competitiveness of the match. There were plenty of closely contested points, with Joe capitalising on his court coverage and Gary spamming his usual share of tricky winners from the back corners. Reluctantly, I feel the time has come to cede my crown as ''laziest player on the Cornwall circuit" to a man who views breaking out of walk as a last resort, is seemingly unaware that he's allowed past the half-court line and has won all his matches this year 3-0 ... only because it's the best way to minimise effort. Most impressive - congratulations, Gary.
Next up was Mason against Lucas at 3. I suspect Lucas, like the rest of the Truro juniors, has been well schooled in playing proper, orthodox squash, so a trip to Bude was always going to be something of a novel experience. Unfortunately for him, Mason was on boisterous form, charging around the court like a young bull elephant, generally getting in the way but playing some powerful squash along the way. Lucas, whose time will surely come, went down fighting to give Bude another 3-0 win.
Game of the night goes to Robin vs. Myles at 2. It's a rare thing to leave Robin sobbing for breath after 2 games, but Myles managed it. He dominated much of the play, running his opponent ragged around all four corners of the court with clinical shot-play, composure and tactical awareness far in advance of his years. I can only conclude that his mother must have exceptional squash talent, as it has to have come from somewhere. All credit to Robin, who stuck to his task to take a 2-0 lead before Myles deservedly pulled a game back. The fourth was a tense affair, and Robin's error count increased as his energy waned ... but not to the comedic levels of seasons past. Once again, he kept his head and secured a hard-fought victory where only 12 months ago there would likely have been a collapse and bitter tears of self-loathing. All in all, a great match played in the best of spirits.
Chris vs Lewis at 1 was another battle, and Lewis came out of the blocks the stronger, taking the first game. His court movement was exceptional and at first it seemed that Chris could not find a way to kill the ball at the front or the back of the court. However, what Chris lacks in fitness and skill, he more than makes up for in sheer doggedness, self-belief and a complete lack of orthodoxy, which somehow allowed him to claw his way back into contention. He retrieved like a man possessed and took advantage of a few loose shots from his opponent to take the next two games. Lewis continued to play at a high standard in the fourth, but looked as if some of the fight had gone out of him, and Chris was able to seal the win for Bude.
All in all, a great evening of squash that left the Bude team very glad of the win and not a little nervous about the prospect of a rematch in the seasons to come. |
