Report

Report:It’s always a pleasure to host Falmouth, and tonight was no exception. The squash was entertaining and the after-squash drinks even more so.

The first match of the evening was Sam against me. I went into the match with unwarranted confidence as, well, I’d seen Sam play before. He didn’t think to tell me that he’d improved. Quite a lot, as it turns out. Despite momentarily losing concentration and letting me run away with the second, he proved by a distance the better player on the night, keeping me under pressure with volleying, short play, athleticism and a dearth of errors. All the things I hate to find in an opponent in fact. Good to see you Sam.

The next match saw a better result for Bude, with Robin beating Billy in straight games. It was observed from the balcony that Billy had half-an-eye on the bar by the end of the second game, but Robin doesn't usually require a focused opponent to throw away a winning position, so fair play to him. And Billy got to have a night out - smiles all round.

The second-string match was a potentially fascinating match-up, with Christian having gone up a gear of late and Mason typically full of both potential and KFC. In the event, the big man was not to be denied, bossing the court with power and precision. Ordinarily blessed with the turning speed of an ocean-going tanker, Mason moved well to the front, forcing a higher-than-usual error count from the Falmouth stalwart, which ultimately cost him the match in straight sets despite an impressive run of points at match-ball.

Chris vs Tom Jay had the makings of a belter, with Chris's unorthodox shot-play more than a match for the Falmouth man's tireless retrieving in the first game. Fitness was always going to be a factor, though, and Chris suffered a nasty sore muscle going into the second. There were uncharitable suspicions (voiced by Bude) that he was gassed and looking to save face. But sadly it seems that the injury is genuine. He played on heroically, finding a way to win the fourth by guile and sheer force of will, but Tom was always favourite for the fifth and so it proved.

Plenty of idiocy in the bar afterwards with too much beer and not enough food. Great night, thanks all.
