Report

Report:An eagerly awaited clash between in-form Bude and an as-yet-untested but obviously strong Penzance second team.

A sprightly Nigel was simply too strong for Mason at 1, getting the night off to a blistering start for the visitors. I didn’t see the match, but reports from the balcony suggest that Nigel looked every inch the ever-green athlete, while Mason looked every inch a slightly greener McDonalds regular. The game scores suggested a decent contest, but fitness and mobility inevitably won out.

Meanwhile, the glass-back was host to what was arguably the battle of the evening. Gary “the G-Man” Walton has seen his game step up since moving to Bude - and it needed to, against the silky skills of wily veteran Tim. Gary came out roaring, mixing pace and an infuriatingly consistent cross-court drop to keep his opponent off-balance, and took the first game in fine style. Old hand that he is, Tim rose to the challenge and romped the second with his trademark boasts. At this point, there were rumblings that the tide had turned and that Bude were staring at a 3-1 defeat. It was not to be. The next two games swung one way and then the other, with both players showing highly uncharacteristic movement and speed to the front, until the match was tied at 2-2. After some much-needed intra-game tactical advice, Gary pushed on, taking advantage of his valiant but tiring opponent to clinch the win.

Next up was Robin vs. Mark, and it was another titanic effort from both players. Robin looked like he was cruising after the first, but he wilted like a hothouse flower in the second as Mark fought back gamely. Robin’s shot superiority saw him take the next, but Mark’s indefatigable pressure and Robin’s dedication to unforced errors left them all-square after the fourth. The final game was a nip-and-tuck affair, but Robin just held on to see out the match.

The final game between the two captains was now the decider. Adrian looked the stronger in the warm-up, but a few lucky shots at crucial moments swung it in Bude’s favour and the home team came away with the result.

Always fun - and tough - to host the Penzance boys, but it was all smiles over a beer or two in the bar afterwards. Roll on the return fixture…
