Report: | Marking his debut this season for Fal3, Sam got the evening off to a fine start with a slog of a first game 21-19 which set the tone for the rest of his match. After losing the next two to some fine length and drop from Adam, Sam battled on, moving forward taking the ball early and commanding the T. However Adam's variety of shots got the better of Sam and some punishing rallies forced mistakes giving Adam first blood.
Next up was Billy playing Steve who you could tell was a very experienced player with probably the most consistent lengths and cross courts of the evening. Rally upon rally Billy was forced into the back corners with hard and fast shots allowing him only to boast which Steve then picked off with tight drops. Steve managed to control the three games and never let Billy get his usual game going.
The third game posed Dave against Peter of which Peter definitely had previous scalps. Dave came out of the blocks with a hard hitting serve and drive game keeping the ball low to counter Peter's height advantage. This worked well with Dave taking the first game. However, Peter picked up the pace in the second and third with fine volleying, drop shots and tricky boasts which Dave couldn't reach. Dave went back to his first game for the fourth and introduced a rare shot in his game; drop shots taking the fourth setting up a fifth game. Both tired and mistakes aplenty the fifth game was tough but Dave managed to pull ahead with good serves and length to just overcome Peter.
Last game of the evening Tom against Gerrit was an exhibition of the finest squash with a huge variety of shots from both players. Tom got his mojo back from the previous week and was playing backhand volley drops into the opposite corner with ease and a lovely drive, drop, lob and cross court combinations. Gerrit was clearly a quality player with fitness to match and just edged Tom over the three games with long rallies, impressive recovery shots finishing with outstanding winners.
A great evening of squash from both sides with Truro5 showing their class and experience. |
