Report

Report:A thoroughly enjoyable night despite the absence of food. An ever-green Rob Page proved too strong for Gerritt at 1, and it was a similar story at 2, with Mason despatching Chris in 3 games. The real tussles came lower down the order. A snuffly Robin took on an out-of-practice Steve at 3 in a nail-biter of a tie, and did the unprecedented, converting a hard-fought 2-0 lead into a 3-0 win. Credit to both players for some great rallies. But game of the night has to go to Gary and Adam. A former Truro 4 captain, Gary has decamped to Bude in search of better-quality squash, and it showed as his impressive movement around court and relentless fitness allowed him to edge the first two games. Adam rallied valiantly, however, showing that there’s more to his game than hitting the ball as hard as possible - there’s gamesmanship and on-court backchat too. Amid a welter of outrageous time-wasting, dangerous shots and what might kindly be described as optimistic let-appeals from both sides, Adam took the next two games to level the match. Gary dug deep in the last, spurred on by the knowledge that his opponent had mentally chalked this tie down as a win for the away team. Adam’s ferocious forehand volley-kills served him well to the end, but Gary would not be denied and ground out a well-deserved win, establishing a 100% win rate for his new club. Thanks to all.
