Report

Report:An evening that was defined less by the squash and more by the afterparty as Truro came in strength, bringing 7 players for a proper Friday night out in Bude.

Julian scored a decisive win in the first-string match, benefitting from consistently outrageous luck to overcome my superior fitness and mobility. The less said about that the better.

In what was Bude’s best individual performance this season, newcomer Nick “Wild” Westlake took Jon Wills to the wire in a tight 5-setter at 2. Westy’s shot selection, width and volleying saw him take a 2-0 lead before Truro’s ultimate competitor clawed his way back with characteristic determination and courtcraft. Congrats to both on a real thriller.

Chris Martin took on Dave at 3, winning the first in good style before the Master reeled him in to seal the tie for Truro.

Rory O’Shea prevented Truro claiming a whitewash, despatching the soon-to-be-defecting Truro captain in 3 epic games.

Match of the evening probably has to go to Tony and Katrina. In a match of contrasting styles, Katrina played with skill and grace and Tony hit the ball as hard as he possibly could. Having laid down the pre-match gauntlet, Bude’s old warhorse pulled out every trick in the book, including nearly climbing on top of his opponent in the second game. The match swung one way then the other but in the end Tony prevailed, at a cost i suspect he’ll only truly feel the next morning. Excellent viewing and happily profitable for some of us in the side betting.

Nick Westlake got back on court to win in straight games against Si Tai, and Tim Fox and Harry Wills had a good sweat-out at racketball to round up proceedings.

The squash club bar got off relatively lightly post-match as we switched from our regular pizzas to refuel instead at Bude Tandoori, followed by a few drinks in Bar 35 and quite a few more in BED nightclub. The sight of Mr Matthew throwing down some signature moves on the dancefloor at 2am will stay with me for a long time.

Many thanks all.
