Report

Report:A thoroughly entertaining evening of squash. With 4 of Bude’s top 5 players absent due to injury, illness and other distractions, I had concerns that this might be a bit of a mismatch. Happily, such fears were groundless. Things got off to a cracking start with a humdinger of a 4th string match between Falmouth’s Sam and Bude newcomer Toby. Sam raced to a 12-0 lead in the first game before Toby found his composure. The gap was too big to close, though, and Sam took a comfortable first game and a much tighter second. Things were, however, far more even at this point and Toby held his nerve and paid admirable heed to his captain’s words of wisdom to claw back two well-contested games to level the score at 2-2. A combination of good width and powerful serving gave the Bude man the edge he needed in the last game, and - despite seemingly zero understanding of the difference between lets, strokes and no-lets - he emerged a relieved but deserving winner.

Meanwhile, it seems an even tighter match was in full swing on the other court between Falmouth stalwart Christian and Bude’s wild-man of squash Rory, making his team debut. Sadly, I did not see this match as I was marking, but the scores, spectator comments and the state of the players afterwards all suggested a titanic struggle, with Christian’s match-play perhaps the deciding factor.

Doctor Tom had a similarly tough time against another Bude debutant, human dynamo Nick, one of those frustrating players who never stops running. Tom used his experience to take a 3-1 victory, before acknowledging wryly that he was very glad it didn’t go to a fifth.

The first-string game was more straightforward, with the ever-improving Matt a comfortable winner in three. That said, Chris pushed him more than many were expecting, with his unconventional game forcing a number of errors from the Falmouth captain. If Chris can recapture his prior levels of fitness, the return match should be much tighter…
