Report

Report:In the final game of last season just before Xmas, Penzance were the only side to beat Bude who won the title. So as fate would have it the first game on the New year was a repeat of that fixture and their 14-7 win was a distant memory in the opening game of the 2022 Spring season.

In the first game, string 4 for Penzance Gordon Mackie, faced Toby Briggs and the youngsters stamina kept the pirate working hard in game 1 but the Pirate dominated the first game. Things changed in the second game as the Bude player at 13-7 up, looked to be levelling the match, however Mackie had other ideas as he won the next eight points in a row to take the second game as well. The third was similar the energetic Briggs led 14-10 with 4 game points but could not save the match, as once again the pirate took the next run of points to complete a not straight forward, but nevertheless straight games win for the Pirates to lead on the night.

Next up was a replica of the game before Xmas as Bude's experienced Rob Irish face Penzance's man with the engine Mark Trevail. Irish was looking for a revenge of the pre Christmas 5 set thriller which Trevail deserved holding on to edge the win. This was a different affair and from the off Trevail was being pushed and pulled and struggled to settle the pace - the Bude player used his experience and winning the first to 10, the second was a lot tighter 15-13 but a straight games win seemed inevitable this time as Irish redressed the loss to winning the string 3 match 3-0 and level the night for Bude.

2nd string Ian Hatch had lost last season to Ali Mason in the away leg 3-0 so revenge was also on his mind no doubt as he stormed through the game never allowing the Bude player to settle. He just got the job done only dropping 14 points in an impressive straight games win to set up a mouth-watering decider for the top string players.

County number 16 Fin Irish needed a straight games win against Nigel Bell the Pirate club champion (currently ranked 30). Bude's lead player started well and took the game 15-5. From a team point of view the gallery knew we needed a minimum or approx 18 points so going into game 2 we were doing the maths and literally every point mattered. Low and behold we put the calculators away shortly into the second as Bell rattled his opponent and unsettled his rhythm to take the 2nd game and guarantee a Pirates win overall 15-11. Irish responded by going 2-1 up but the Pirate was intent on a grandstand finish as he served to level the game. Two game points were saved though in some gut busting rallies and then it was Irish who had match point in the tie break and at 17-15 sealed the very close and impressive effort from Bell.
