Report: | An enjoyable evening at Truro where both teams feel at home, even if no quarter is given on the squash courts. The usual moans were heard from Gary W about the standard of marking in his game, but strangely the gallery watching didn't agree with his views. Top marks to Mike Wheeler for taking a well-deserved game off Gary. It should and could have been more. Richard Elwell battled well against evergreen Simon Clitherow and again perhaps deserved more. Dave Matthew v Pete Keam was the sublime against the ridiculous. Dave showing Peter the four corners of the court and more in a well worked victory. Match of the evening was Russ V Tony in a County O60 battle royal. A blood and guts bout with the referee having to make a decision no less than 6 times in the first game! Tony's exertions became audible halfway through the second game, with each shot accompanied by a noisy repertoire worthy of a David Attenborough documentary (Bull seal comes to mind) To be fair these guttural noises seemed to bother the referee and the gallery more than Russ, who to his credit only asked for a let once following a particularly noisy serve. Tony held on to take the spoils in three close games and everyone enjoyed a splendid meal afterwards. Many thanks to Russ for stepping in at the very last moment (after playing earlier in the day!) |

Away Report: | Phew! Quite a night! On and off court there wasn't a dull moment and hats off to both teams for all their efforts! TR5 are trying so hard and I'm sure their day will come! Pete's enthusiasm as skipper is a great positive for the Truro Club but someone needs to give him a Truro shirt, for sure! TR4 may be riding high but their RU aspirations in Div 2 will come under severe examination next week when they travel north up the Atlantic Highway to play on the Barrington Court at Bude..... |

Notes: | Yes, fully agree with the H captain's analysis of the evening and marking tight ones is always a challenge. A much stronger TR5 really got stuck into their higher ranked opponents. Mike and Richie were exemplary on court and gave good accounts of themselves showing clear signs of improvement. Pete is giving it his all at 1 but the imperious and evergreen Dave (the Elder) is so dangerous when he dominates the T. Good to see both players bent over gasping for air and looking like medical intervention might be needed soon though! Russ, star of the all-conquering County Over 60s '3 Russketeers' side, is an example to us all stepping in at the last minute after already playing in the afternoon! His 2nd string match against old sparring partner Tony was muck and bullets and the marker handled it well - a 'Gingellesque' performance! Tony is now aware of his grunting but reckons it's more Sharapova than Blue Planet 2 bull seal! She's his favourite and inspiration anyway! Can't think why??? When told about the grunting controversy his wife said 'Can't believe it! He hasn't grunted in years'! Make of that what you will! Anyway, future opponents and markers take note, the Administrator recommends ear protectors! But all said and done, win or lose, happy or unhappy, controversial or not, great shots or bad ones, San Miguel or Carlesberg, the evening definitely had it all! And when the whiff of testosterone eventually subsided, it was great to see all angst and ire put firmly aside as both teams bonded chummily over a beer or two and got stuck into Clare's delightful pork casserole! By the way, it is true that Clare knows everything..... |
