Report

Report:A very close encounter between two strong Div2 sides which looked like it was heading for a count back until Tr1 top string Julian made an inspired comeback from 2-0 down to level his match v the young county plate winner. The ever improving Fin kept his cool and powered ahead in the 5th to take it comfortably but it was Julian who left the court smiling with the knowledge that his two games won were enough to bag those valuable 3 bonus points. What went on before set up this tense finish superbly! First on to warm up the crowd were Tony (me) and Rob at #4. The veteran Truronian had a good night with his boasts all of which were low and almost unplayable. A rarity but I’ll take it! Rob had just stepped on court after the drive down so that usually spells trouble! Rob’s most effective weapons were his howitzer drives to the back which Tony couldn’t even see at times! A good encounter and an unexpected result of 3-0 which I’m sure Rob will do his utmost to reverse if the rematch happens at Fortress BUDE at the business end of the season. One would normally expect The Master to do better at home in his rematch with Chris who won last time. Chris, however, is visibly improving and seems to glide to most shots with a fair amount of ease! He can certainly tuck away loose shots too so 3-0 was the obvious score. Dave left licking wounds! Match finely poised at 3 a piece! Deon v Ali up next and with no previous matches between these two it was hard to guess the outcome. Ali wasn’t in the first so put that down to ‘car lag’ but fought back handsomely to even the bout at 1-1. I didn’t see what followed but by all accounts it was high calibre stuff! The third went to the wire Deon just shading it 17-15, the 4th was nip and tuck too but at the death it was the home player who wrapped it up. A darn good battle it was indeed. Talking of which, the crowd shifted back to crt 3 to see Julian’s heroic fight back and an exciting climax to a hard fought evening. Tr4 glad to win against the promotion hopefuls and knowing full well that beating BUDE at BUDE is fantasy talk! Well done both teams, a great evening for squash nutters and thanks to Pam for the fine grub. Now to get back to the club to find Ali’s top he left!

Administrator Notes

Notes:Penzance at Tr4 next Monday - the top two go head-to-head. It’s going to be an exciting scramble for the title with any of 4 sides capable of beating each other. Pirates look favourites by a tiny margin at the moment. Julian will have to play his very best against Nigel who is undefeated so far. A Pirate win will set up a nice gap at the top. A good Tr4 win will knock them off the perch!
