Report: | I’m not going to lie - a very satisfying and entirely unexpected 15 points for Bude vs. a competitive Falmouth side. Very close matches at 4 and 3 saw Bude’s old guard (Nick G and yours truly) claim redemption for last week’s mediocre showing in Penzance with tense and - dare I say it? - heroic 3-2 wins over Billy and Oli, respectively. Chris faced a stern test at 2 against fitness machine Tom Jay. Using consistent length to pin Tom to the back and largely neutralise his short game, Chris took a commanding 2-0 lead before losing focus a little and allowing the tireless Tom to take the third. He got his second wind and rallied well in the fourth game to close the match out convincingly. As ever, it was anyone’s guess which Fin would show up at 1. Unhappily for Dr Tom, it was the racehorse not the donkey. The first game was a steady affair with powerful exchanges and good rallies, but Fin was in control and took it comfortably. The second saw the Bude player step up a level, with patient lengths, pinpoint volleys and killer holds that left Tom with nowhere to go. The third started In a similar vein, with Fin taking enough of a lead to weather a trademark wobble to win the match 3-0. As ever, much inappropriate banter in the bar afterwards topped off a great evening. |

Notes: | Well done the old guard at BUDE! Two 3-2s to top off a fine evening. Sounds like all matches were competitive and glad the 'Invincibles' returned to more of the same but that was expected at Fortress Bude! A fine report again, Rob, and looking forward to the County Champs and what will be a very busy weekend of squash with a higher than usual number of entrants - 35 in all! The Bude SC reps, father and son combo, will not be expected to play their first round matches until Sat am unlike many who will have to play at Truro HQ on Friday evening to fit all the games in! It's going to take consistency and a few 15s to claw back the deficit in Div2 with The Huwligans and The Pirates doing so well but we all love a challenge! |
