Report

Report: Despite the widespread, worldwide panic, TR4 hosted Bodmin for what may be one of the last matches of the Spring League. It was another one of those times when the scoreline seemed harsh on the losers.
The number ones, Pete and Mike, went on first. With his customary fast pace and deceptive shots Pete took the first game easily, with Mike struggling with the ball speed. It was a different story in the second and Pete was somewhat lucky to take it 15-13. Mike found his range in the third and took it 15-8 with Pete looking decidedly knackered! The fourth was nip and tuck and could have gone either way but in the end Pete edged the tiebreak but it could so easily have gone to a 5th.
Next up was Si against Harry and to be fair neither player really played their best. Harry made too many unforced errors in the first and Si was generally loose. In the second, Harry reduced his error count and played some nice winners but I'm still at a loss why he lost the game having been 14-8 up! I'll put it down to inexperience but I'm sure his game will significantly improve if he perseveres. He's certainly quick around the court! Si closed the match 3-0 and even though he's looking fitter, he'll want to find more consistency for next season.

The Master, Dave, took on Tom and it proved to be a good match. The first was a bit mesmerising for Tom as he tried to acclimatise to a barrage of drops, lobs, boasts and a 'big arse'! He managed to though and won the second quite easily which put Dave under real pressure. Unfortunately for Tom, he strained his back in the 3rd and even though he came close in the 4th game, a valiant effort saw him lose 3-1.
Last on was Deon and Andy and it proved to be the closest match of the night. It seemed to be a battle of two players where neither were comfortable volleying or playing drops! We certainly watched plenty of long rallies and the match ebbed and flowed from the start, making it difficult to choose a winner. In the end, Deon prevailed but he had to work hard for the victory. He's made some changes to his game and it's clear that it's a work in progress at the moment. Once he starts volleying more and playing a confident drop shot, look out all you number 1's!
It's clear to me that all the Bodmin players have improved since I first watched them, so it will be interesting to see what levels they reach next season.
So, in the end it was a good win for TR4 but a great effort by Bodmin. TR4 finish the season top but it could all be meaningless. However, it's been a good season and we'll look forward to more battles later in the year. Stay healthy!
