Report: | Truro travelled strong to Bodmin for the last fixture of January where both sides needed the points for alternative reasons! Harry up first against Tony which showcased youth vs experience where experience had enough although credit to Harry for not being fooled by any disguise and chasing down very well. More court time will soon show huge improvements. Next up I (Tom) faced the new hardback handicap champion Dave. Very enjoyable game which Dave played a great fifth against tired legs. (Don’t think he tried in the fourth!) Andy and Deon decided to play chase with brutal rallying and more chance of tumbleweed then drop shots. Deon took the match in three to prevent more pain while Andy still looked fresh. (Credit to Tony for assisting Harry with the marking :) ). Final match saw Mike against Julian. A few high quality moments in the match which peaked and flowed for both players saw Julian take it in four.
Truro with the victory but a well enjoyed night by all followed up with a slightly improved naan and the possible creation of Cornwall’s first Racketlon championships! |

Notes: | Great report, Tom. Fair and honest, just like the whole evening. A credit to good sportmanship! My take on it is pretty similar: Tony lucky to get a win in against Tom who with more court time will develop into a fine squash player - those essential attributes of speed and agility will soon be too much for the veterans in our leagues! Tony glad to notch up the W - phew! Dave characteristically started slowly before the heavy combo of ibuprofen and volterol (our sponsors) obviously kicked in. Just joking! Just his joints are creaky and take a while to warm up! Tom played very well in the two he took and could quite easily have got across the line with his powerful overhead volleying! Tom stylish as ever! Deon and Andy decided the back corners were the best places to put the ball! At times though the obvious shot was a drop but I’m sure that will come one day! Some amazing rallies with Deon just edging Andy out in each of the three - a tight 3-0 which could easily have been an exhausting five setter. There was one great rally though which included a large brown moth fluttering across the court. The rally was 20 plus shots (back corners exclusive!) but both players managed to avoid the silent intruder with Deon even changing his step to miss the creature which landed somewhere forward of the service line! I have to say I was very tense throughout! Well done both! Then the climax to the evening with the #1s. Jules does have a good record against Mike whose form has dipped slightly of late, I feel. Mike didn’t turn up for the first but then got into the rallies in the 2nd and looked the stronger player. Julian looked out on his feet at times - it was certainly higher tempo than the other three rubbers - but always serves well so edged out the ‘decider’ 3rd narrowly at 16-14! The 4th dipped in quality with Jules in control. Great to watch! All over by 9pm thanks to the 6:30 start.
Bodmin deserved more from the match but Truro will be pleased with the 15 as they head into BUDE and the Pirates at Truro HQ in the next two. We’ll know much more about who’s likely to prevail at the top by then! The Dragons meanwhile can look forward to more winnable matches coming up! Good curry too and that Racketlon idea is a cracker, Tom! CCSRA would support it fully!!!
