Report: | The Bodmin Slayers were the first team to visit Newquay 2 after the Christmas break.
First on was Matt Harford against Max Knightly. This match was played at a high tempo with Max hitting the ball with a lot of power and cutting in his volleys with accuracy. Matt took a while to get going but started to find his line and length, and with Max tiring from the fast pace Matt became more dominant and ran out the 3-0 winner.
Next on was Mike Morgan against Dave Egerton. The first game was really close, Dave showing some great touch at the front of the court and volleying into the nick on quite a few occasions. Mike just taking the game 16/14.That game appeared to take alot out of Dave, and with Mike's fitness holding out he went on to take the match 3-0.
Next up was Dave Priem against Matt Nicholls.Dave managed to get off to a good start in the first game, with Matt struggling to find any rythem and Dave volleying so not having to move his ample body. Matt slowly started to get into the match, but on this occasion Dave had too much taking the match 3-0.
Last on was Darren Shaw against ex County champion Gavin Johnson. This was a cracking match to finish on. With Gavin looking like the lead singer of ZZ Top and still moving and hitting the ball beautifully and Darren striking the ball with great power and accuracy the match was a five game thriller although a injury break was needed with Gavin rolling his ankle. Gavin managed to push through showing he still retains great ability and speed taking the match 3-2.
A very enjoyable evening at Newquay with Newquay 2 getting off too a good start to the second half of the season!

Notes: | Welcome back the Man! Or should I say ZZ Top Man? Gavin Johnson, former winner of the illustrious Carlyon Trophy (first presented in 1933!) back in his sprightly days of youth before leaving to join HM forces, were glad to have you back.... and so will Max be!! A great win on his debut too and what a humdinger of a five setter with a 19-17 and a 15-17 in the last two! That result will surely be the talk of the county this week! Bodmin will have to capitalise on their home matches, I feel, unless they can entice the Welsh Wizard (Chris) back on crt in which case they’ll have the firepower to be title contenders!
Note to admin: Max to verify ASAP if next Wednesday’s home match Slayers v TR3 can go ahead? Maintenance work on lights on the CRTs at Bodmin Dragon Centre - should know timings on Monday. PLS NOTE ALL BODMIN HOME GAMES START @ 7:15 USING TWO CRTS which is different from previously advertised. |
