Report

Report:With Jack having to pull out with a migraine, it was always going to be a difficult night for Truro 2 against Newquay 2.

The Joe and Russ match was a good contest. Russ used his great racket skills to get Joe behind him in the 1st game. In the 2nd game Joe stopped making mistakes from boasts and played his best squash of the match to take the game. But in the end, apart from some flashes of brilliance from Joe, Russ proved too strong for the Junior.

Ben and Mike was another good contest. First game was the closest, with Ben making a few too many errors to win it. In the 2nd and 3rd, Ben played better and hardly made any errors, but Mike upped the quality and, though there were some great rallies, won it in 3.

Owen and Darren saw some great squash. Owen took the 1st game with some excellent kills at the front. Darren fought back really well to take the 2nd with ease. But Owen was too focussed on the night and, though each of the 3rd and 4th game were competitive, he managed to win in 4.

Matt against Louis was a mouth-watering prospect. The first game was amazing. Both players played superb squash and there were hardly any errors. Matt took it 15-12. The 2nd was even closer. Again, amazing squash between the two of them with Matt taking it 17-15. In Newquay earlier in the year, Matt also went 2-0 up and Louis battled back and won it 3-2. Tonight it wasn’t to be. Matt started the 3rd with some great squash, floating the ball high and Louis could not get the momentum he needed to fight back. A very good victory for Matt and a night where Louis could not quite reach the standard he has set for himself all year.

Newquay 2 won 13-4 and relegation is a real concern now for Truro 2.

Administrator Notes

Notes:Mouth watering indeed in the Louis v Matt rubber! Matt will regard this as a major W and for Louis it will be a reminder that the better opponents will always come back stronger. Matt is the thinking man’s squash player and undoubtedly had a game plan that worked though toughing it out in the first two and probably getting a bit of good fortune meant the Newquay man good over the line. Had Louis made it 1-1 it might have been so different. Owen is continuing to improve at a good rate and this W against a familiar opponent in Darren proves it. Well done Owen. Thereafter Joe and Ben will be glad of their match time which will be so important on the 19th at Nottingham for Truro School’s eagerly awaited attempt to win the National Schools’ Trophy for the first time in their history. They were so close last year so let’s hope Jack can get get some form and put an indifferent season due to injury behind him. We are all willing them on to victory which if it happens will be the first time Truro School have won a national event at any sport. Fingers are most definitely crossed here.
