Home | Return to Division Fixtures
Report: | A tight match and a good W for the home side! Fal3 missed Alex (aka ‘shire horse’) at 2, it has to be said, so the return fixture could easily produce a different result. Yummy, Julian v Alex will attract a crowd for sure! However, TR4 won’t worry about that for now - a win is a win, as they say!
The #1s went on first gracing the show court with plenty of high tempo rallies but Huw (county 45) was the steadier and while Ras (county 28) had flashes of brilliance he couldn’t sustain it in the end. Gaining the advantage with an unplayable winner then serving out on more than one occasion will haunt the youngster for a while. Huw cleverly played on the weakness by stepping forward to force the faulted lob serve. Smart!
Next up and eagerly awaited by all, Julian v Pete. It’s a measure of Pete’s continued improvement that he had Julian scampering all over the place to win the first comfortably. Then somewhere in the middle of the 2nd the tide visibly turned as Julian gradually wore down his less mobile opponent and got him away from his favourite perch, the T! 3-1 to Julian in the end but a fair collection of squash level points for the loser. Not an easy match for the marker, however!?!?
Finely poised at 4-3 to Fal3 on trotted ‘The Master’ to take on newcomer Alan who certainly looked the real deal in the warm-up. Leading 13-7 it looked like Alan had no intention of showing any respect for his veteran opponent. Then Dave’s ‘lob then drop’ style of play moved into top gear enough at least to steal the first 17-15! From then on it was more of the same - up in the air, Alan on the back foot, followed by the killer drop. Frustrating for Alan and a good lesson in winning without too much exertion for anyone watching!
6-4 to Truro so it all rested on the final ‘bout’ of the evening, yours truly v Matt. It was obvious pretty early on that there wasn’t a lot in it and taking the first was quite a relief. Matt made fewer errors in the second, I meanwhile made loads! One a piece! Matt didn’t look like he was folding easily - he’s used to Ironman events, after all - but the errors accumulated and 😀 Tony bagged the 3rd! From then on the veteran’s legs emptied glycogen faster than Huw could down his 🍺 putting Matt in the driving seat all too often. Tony’s pitiful efforts in the 4th were then further punished in the 5th. Fine win for the recently converted badminton player but Tony had done enough to win the match - reminder to team mates!!! The match was interrupted however by an overzealous Falmouth supporter, not for the first time I might add, who should know better. It rather took the shine off a great match.
Overall, a good, exciting, topsy-turvy evening of competitive squash at Truro HQ and a tight one with the bonus points won by the home team who go top of Div2 for at least a week but face the long, often fruitless trip up the Atlantic Highway to fortress Bude next week. The ‘Huwligans’ have a tricky one too at the Pirates and that peculiar court!
A fine meal by Pam concluded the evening which was very sociable and enjoyed by all. Note to Ras: remember to check your kit before setting off next Thursday! Your mum won't be able to bring your shorts in a hurry! |
