Report

Report:A lively night at Western Terrace, with both falmouth division two teams playing.
Runner up spot was up for grabs, with Fal3 4 points ahead of Penzance going into the last match of the first half of the season.
First up was Rob Irish, a particularly strong number 4 in the division vs the veteran Nick Banfield. Rob had a slow start with Nick pushing him, before his powerful play and reverse shots got the better of Nick.
Then it was Fal3 form player Matt S vs new dad Chris H. Matt came out of the traps rapidly and a brutal high paced match ensued. It looked like Matt was going to have it all his own way with Chris looking tired but his relentless last ditch retrievals were effective and he managed to take the third before Matt saw out the match.
Then the battle of the ex rugby players Alex and Ali, an highly anticipated match, which wasn't going to plan when Ali went two nil up. Alex dragged himself into the match taking it to a fifth before Ali took the win.
Last up Fin vs myself (Huw), I managed to get a couple of games under my belt before Fin settled in and played some sublime shots giving me no chance, it was a high paced match with lots of desperate retrieving (me), Fin levelled it up to 2-2 to have a fifth game shoot out. It was a tense finale, going to a tie break, which I managed to take.
A competitive evening, with some mega rallies and enjoyable socialising after the match. Fal2 managed to register their first win of the season on count back, so with Fal3 getting runner up spot it was a happy camp at Western Terrace.
Looking forward to next season.

Administrator Notes

Notes:A Falmouth double header atmosphere rewarded With two home wins, one securing R/U for Huw’s charges ahead of PZ who put in a last minute romp up the table, the other an uplifting first win for Oli’s team! The post match meal must have been quite a jubilant affair with Champions BUDE (newly dubbed ‘The Invincibles’) ending the Aut League unbeaten except for the Pirates whose hopes of glory were firmly dashed. As County Chair this gives me such pleasure - not the Pirates losing, of course - but to know there’s such a positive buzz at matches!!! The other thing we learnt was that Huw wears the crown as ‘Mr Invicible’, the only unbeaten player in the Cornwall leagues this season! Of note also we’re the good hits and mega rallies with Matt looking stronger than ever beating Chris and Ali winning the ‘dark underworld of the scrum’ against fellow ex-rugby man Alex! Nick, a confirmed racketballer, super fit for his six decades and canny in all corners, put in an appearance which is good to see! It’ll be busy at Falmouth in January onwards with the students joining the fray, another plus for Cornwall and Falmouth! Squash is alive and well in our corner of the world - happy days!
So it’s all over then just the new racket and flash court shoes to put on the list for Santa. It all starts again in the 2nd week of the new year.....
