Report: | Tonight saw a very valiant effort from a heavily-depleted Falmouth team. The pick of the matches was the first, which saw Fin pitted against Matt. The first two games went comfortably - perhaps too comfortably - to Fin, with Matt’s court movement letting him down and gifting a number of strokes and easy finishes to his opponent. Matt hit his stride to take the third and fourth, with some eye-popping retrievals and increasingly tight shots. The last game was a humdinger, swinging back and forth, with neither player backing down. A decisive rally towards the end saw Fin take control and then edge out the match, to his visible relief. Chris had a far easier time of it against David W-H, extending his winning streak to four in a tie so good-natured that they continued playing after the match had finished! Ali did what Ali does - never a bad game for the team, and emerging victorious yet again against Dave C. The games were tight, however, and he had more of a battle on his hands than the 3-0 score line suggests. Last up was Tremaine the Machine against Huw. My money was on the Bude player, but it was always going to be a close match. Huw edged a very close first game, before Tremaine bounced back convincingly in the second. The third game was the crucial battleground and, despite feeling his age, Huw proved more dominant in the middle of the court, dropping and volleying to good effect. Similar tactics saw him pull ahead in the fourth and for once Tremaine seemed all out of answers, allowing the visitors to take a well deserved win. A great atmosphere, with some additional support provided by travelling Falmouth fans and a visiting Exeter player who dropped in briefly. Nearly converted a veggie to pepperoni pizza too, but not quite... |

Notes: | Another stupendous win for the Budists. The last time anyone beat them at Fortress Bude was when there were yo-yo Div1 teams like NQY1 in our league and certainly finding the last defeat by a true Div2 side will take some investigating which I will do one day when it rains! What stands out from these scores is Huw’s W v Tremaine which gives him bragging rights for now as the Div’s top #1 and TOP PLAYER. We didn’t see that coming. Shame though the Torpedo won’t be around for the return match before Xmas. Then again Julian is unbeaten and he’s hoping to ruffle feathers at Falmouth v The Huwligans in a couple of weeks. Great, another mouth watering fight night! Matt also nearly pulled off his finest win against Fin, lest we forget. Ali and Chris just power on. Such strength in depth but the Budists will need that when Tremaine goes! Great report, Rob, and top spot in Div2 confirmed. |
