Report: | An intriguing match-up, with all matches looking like they could potentially go either way on paper. First up at 4 was a much improved Robin, rotated in at late notice, against the grizzled Truro warhorse Tony. I was marking on another court, so sadly didn’t get to watch - but I’m told it was an enjoyable tussle, with Robin’s fitness and court speed edging it over Tony’s technical prowess and Robin’s own predilection for unforced errors. A very impressive start to the season for the newly qualified policeman! Chris at 3 faced his old nemesis Dave, who last time saw him off in a 3-2 thriller on the Truro courts. The roles were reversed this time with Chris volleying and retrieving to great effect, although the match swung back and forth until the last. Two wins in succession for Chris is rare territory indeed - Bude will be holding their breath to see if he can make it 3 at Bodmin next week... Fin vs Ras at 2 was a fascinating match-up. The two juniors are old adversaries, and the upper hand has passed from one to the other as the years have gone by. This time it was Ras’s turn to take home the bragging rights as his improved movement and fitness allowed him to use his natural flair to good advantage. The match got off to a nervy start, but Ras settled by far the better after losing a scrappy first game and played with great control and determination to take the match 3-1. Finally, and eating well into pizza time, was Tremaine vs. Pete. I’m increasingly of the view that anyone over 40 who gets on court with Tremaine deserves a medal or psychiatric help, so all credit to Pete for taking up the challenge at 1. Indeed, such is his natural ability and competitive spirit that he took the fight to the younger player and held on to take the first game 16-14. Tremaine is tireless, however, and has improved his shot variation considerably. He took the second game in convincing style, and sadly Pete had to retire half-way through the 3rd due to injury. All told, a solid home win for Bude against gallant opposition, and an enjoyable evening all round! |

* A bit concerned by Dave's disparaging remarks about Camelford both on the way up and back, but he drove so forgiven. |

Notes: | A good night out if varying degrees of success on court for the visitors. I will endeavour to look up the last time anyone won at Fortress Bude in the league, such is my sad life! Stats are important after all! Of the quartet only Fin looked out of sorts (apart from the non-playing captain, of course!) and I can definitely say that Tremaine (top dog #1 in Div2 contender!), Chris and 'Bobby' Robin are all much stronger players now! Fin, of course, had Ras to contend with so that's a bit unfair as you can only play as well as your oppo will let you! I'm just thinking that youngsters can improve easily and in small timescales unlike us oldies who decline slowly but inexorably surely! Ras is flying at the moment and only has one dent in his pride which was inflicted by Huw, masterful and sublime at times, last week! Tremaine v Huw on the 24th - mouthwatering!! I can only put down my defeat to being unnerved at key moments by the sight of Ali watching on from crt 2's gallery! No, I jest not! Yes, I do - well done Robin! But seriously though, the Budists look to be putting together a serious haul of pts as they move into top spot in Div2. Great report Rob and get well soon! |
