Report: | The evening started off on the warmer orange court, which thanks also to the new shirts is the colour of the dragon slayers (FIRE!) which we were also on last night against the NOBS.
Dave and Mego got us started in what set the tone for the evening tie breaks galore! Mego drawing first blood in a narrow first, only to be swiftly replied in kind by Dave. The 3rd was close again with Carl edging again in a very close game. Setting up a grand finale 4th going all the way to 19-17, with Carl taking the 4th and sealing a hard earned 3-1 W fresh from Kenya. Great stuff from both guys with the usual smiles all round!
Next up was Head Master Matt against the Gaffa!
Both came flying out the blocks in this one and the first game really did show it, Matt nicking it 15-13 to keep the tie breaks going.
Burneli however had no intention of letting Matt have this all his own way, taking the second game to 11-11 before a couple of mistakes then a cool 'roller' for Matt to finish the game off.
The 3rd Matt took more control and the error count from the Gaffa went up and Matt taking another W. Good clean game to watch with some good retrieving by both.
Next to don the new shirt was the Rhys, up against Matt W who have had some tasty games over the past few seasons.
To keep the tie break theme going and back on the ORANGE court in the ORANGE top, Rhys battled to take the first 16-14 after being neck and neck at 14-14. From here it was clear this was going to be a battle to the death and they didn't disappoint!
Matt came back in the second after some wise words from Phil taking the game a little more comfortably, however Rhys obviously didn't get the memo and came storming back to take the 3rd. Some long hard rallies in this one had both players having to put in a big shift, Rhys taking it to take the lead 2-1.
Again Matt came out of the blocks like a man possessed and stormed to a 7-1 lead, making this game all but impossible for Rhys to get back into, Matt playing some wonderful shots. Rhys did get back 9-11, but the effort had taken its toll and Matt eased out the rest of the game setting up a grand finale.
Both players battered and bruised entered the den for the final show down, and this was tit for tat all the way through. Nothing to pick between them. It was Matt who was poised to take the W, serving for it 14-12, but Rhys had the taste of blood and was too close for his first W over Matt to let it go, coming back and taking it to another tie break, then taking the W in a great game.
Well played both but a massive well done to Rhys here.
Last on was el capitano against Phil, and I don't now if it was the new ORANGE shirts? Or the new ORANGE strings Mike had just pout in for me? But I took the first 15-10. Thinking I had caught Phil by surprise, or just really dazzled him? I was happy and could of left the court there, but no, it was time for more tie breaks and another 3-2! The second Phil turned up the wick a little and took the game 15-13 to keep the tie breaks going.
The 3rd, the same again but this going in my favour and to take a 2-1 lead. By this point thinking I can never play in another shirt this must be lucky! The 4th came and went a little quicker as Phil's fitness bean to come into the equation, his retrievals were becoming unbelievable at times! Much t my dismay. This setting up another grand finale, and another close hard fought game. Neither player wanting to accept defeat after a long onslaught. In the end it was Phil who got the privilege of the final scalp of the night. Which was also the Slayers final home game before the Christmas break.
Summary,
Brilliant match up tonight, NOBS without Mark which would have been a different storey, but the Slayers also without Chris.
Great evening of squash, probably the best that's been at the Den in a while, with close hard fought games all the way down the order.
Great meal at trusty spoons with beers and laughs. The view might not have been quite as good as the bar in Kenya where Matt and Mego were last week, that looked truly amazing.
A final home game with a victory to sign off in blazing style over the NOBS. Good luck with the rest of your games. A week of for the slayers then the good old Falmouth boys up next. |

Notes: | Wow! Stunning W for the on fire Slayers in their new orange shirts. Man for man better than The Nobs and one up for Max’s outfit as both teams look to avoid the wooden spoon. A standout victory for Rhys - if at first you don’t succeed try and try again - and another near miss for Max (I think Stevie and Max must have more five setters to their names than anyone). Converting 2-3s to 3-2s is the next step and Max has certainly filled Chris’ boots with some aplomb!! Good to see Dave back and enjoying his squash again and am I right in thinking this is Darren’s first W? Well done if so. A cheerful conclusion to a good night at the Den! Loved the report, Max! Onwards and upwards.... |
