Report: | We welcomed Falmouth to the Dragon Den for an evening of great squash and spoon finest!
First on was new boy Matt taking on Hugh, After a close first game and a comfortable second for Hugh the match seemed to be wrapped up. But a steely effort in the 3rd saw Matt clinch one back, this was however in vein as Hugh went on to take the 4th and the W. Some great rallies by both.
Next on was Rhys and Matt which I am gutted I didn't get to watch as it was always going to be a close game.
Rhys flew out the blocks with an emphatic 15-3 in the first, before Mat gained some ground back in the 2nd. Rhys then had 6 game balls in the 3rd but was unable to stop Matt who was on a roll.
With Matt taking the 4th in another close game, I am sure it is one they will both be looking forward to the return leg.
With both of Rhys's splintered, cracked and taped up rackets binned at the end. Could it be the start of a new era for him and a change in fortune??? I believe so.
Me and Martin were on the other court meanwhile immediately getting down to battle, the first going in my favour 17-15, with a lot of hard hitting mixed in with some front court touches I think we both knew it was going to be a long one.
Martin took the 2nd a little more comfortably, before I decided lets have another 17-15 game which I nabbed. True to form Martin then took the 4th comfortably before setting up...… you guessed it, ANOTHER 17-15! this time Martin deciding he wanted the spoils taking the W in a close game and enjoyable game between two lefties.
Last on was Chris and Jonny. It was clear from the outset Jonny was in no mood for messing about. After last weeks W over Phil he was after the same result here and it showed.
With some clean hitting from both and some clinical finishes Jonny had etched out a convincing 2-0 lead taking the games 15-8 and 9 respectively.
The 3rd was a different ball game, the pace was drained from the game somewhat and things were a lot closer. With Jonny turning the screw at the crucial moment taking the game 15-13.
Would have been interesting to see what would of happened if Chris had ground the 3rd out, but it wasn't to be and it was another great win for Jonny, who's unbeaten quest rolls on to another week.
Will the TR2 starlets be able to stop the impressive form that Falmouth are carrying?
Can the Slayers get anything out of TR1 next week? Stay tuned in to find out. |

Notes: | I’m staying tuned Max and I reckon you’ll have a good chance against Neil’s creaking outfit next outing. Falmouth are in great form at the moment and are injury free for once which is why, I suppose! Huw and Matt are both fit and agile around the court so I’m not surprised they ran out winners, and yes I noticed two broken rackets in the bin, lurid orange they were, the following night when we played the Dragons - that’s costly, Rhys! The standout match was Max v Martin and I just hope the eventual winning couple of points weren’t jammy ones off the wood! It’s often the way when the two combatants are equal! Great match though and as losing goes I find 3-2s the best! True sportsmen take it on the chin and learn from reversals. Jonny is on fire at the moment and the standout #1 in the county with 4 out of 4 Ws! Chris seems a little off the pace at the moment as his results suggest so I hope he can turn it around. Such a classy player when on song and confident, a fine addition to our pool of squash talent in the county presently. Tough it out and the results will return, I’m sure. Thanks for your captaincy MK and best of luck in Truro but don’t tell them I said so! 😂 |
