Report

Report:Great night of squash tonight at Truro. Truro 2 missing Jack, Ben and Ollie (broken arm). Was always going to be a tough set of matches.

Firstly, it must be said how the Bodmin players were very supportive of the Juniors. Very much appreciated as it is a tough ask to play men when most of the Truro team are averaging 14 years old. Great to see.

First up were Callum and Dave. This was a great match, extremely close, played in the best of spirits. It was so close up to 2-2, with Dave playing great squash and Callum scrambling to get one extra ball back. This was a ‘coming of age’ match for Callum, he didn’t give up on any ball throughout the whole match and, in the end, managed to push through in the 5th. A fantastic match to watch. And Dave was a perfect Gentleman.

Next up was Joe and Matt. Another really close match that was destined to go to five. Joe had a ‘monster match’ recently against Bucks in the Inter Counties - losing narrowly in 5. He was determined not to loose this and just managed to scrape through 16-14 in the 5th. Another really enjoyable match with great skill from both players. Some of the rallies were awesome - and so good to see Juniors coming through and playing great, constructive squash.

Owen against Rhys next. Rhys was playing beautiful squash; accurate with amazing pressure and hold. Owen had his ‘game head on’. Whereas earlier in the season Owen may have unravelled when the pressure was on, in this match he pushed on at the crucial moments of the 3 games he won. Rhys played superb squash, but Owen played the bigger points a fraction better and won 3-1. Again, great for Junior squash in Cornwall and so good to see Owen reaching his potential. His Mum’s Birthday tonight, so many generations of Londons were there to cheer him on.

Louis and Max were next up as the 1st string players. I think Max will admit that there was not much he could do against Louis tonight. Louis is getting stronger and stronger, his length was brilliant and he attacked at just the right time. Although the rallies were intense and exciting, Louis always managed to come out on top. Again, though, Max was very supportive and Bodmin were appreciative of how our Juniors are progressing.

A great night of squash and sportsmanship tonight with Truro 2 coming out top as 15-5 winners.

Administrator Notes

Notes:To me this has 'progress' written all over it from the youngsters' point of view. Louis get's stronger each match and hopefully has the injury spell behind him now, Owen has matured and regularly shows he's capable of competing with the best, Joe is undoubtedly going to be a key player for TR2 and Truro School this campaign and Callum is gutsy and always keen to get on court (Tim is full of praise for him!). Bodmin meanwhile are stuttering after losing Chris who feels he needs a break. Max is doing a great job keeping the team afloat and full credit to the reserves who come in weekly. Great to hear that The Slayers gave it their all and were magnanimous in defeat! Concerns: Jack is injured and Ollie has broken his arm falling off a skateboard and may miss most of the season now.
