Report

Report:Jack (injured) and Ben (away) were missing from the Truro 2 line-up. This was a good chance to give valuable experience to Ollie and Callum before the next round of National Schools competition.

Falmouth 1 fielded a very strong side with Ben MacDonald returning to Falmouth after playing a match for Truro 2 last year. This was always going to be a very difficult night for the Truro Juniors.

Callum played well against Matt, but Matt was always too strong. Although there were some very impressive rallies, Matt always had the power and accuracy to win the point. Good experience for Callum. Great that he could compete against a player like Matt.

Ollie has improved so much in the last year. He is strong and focussed and is loving his squash. Although Martin was always on top, it is a tribute to how much Ollie has come on that he could compete as much as he did. Martin played well and made it 2-0 for Falmouth.

Next came Owen against Ben. Hard to describe how much Owen has improved this year. His length, short-game and fitness have gone to another level. At 2-1 up, he really pushed Ben close in the 4th. In the 5th it was close until Ben used all his beautiful racket work to take the win when he was looking the more tired of the two players. Fantastic for the Londons and for Cornish squash that Owen is improving at such a rate. Will be looking for Owen to be a key player in the Inter Counties this month. Great match with some fantastic squash played by both players and congratulations to Ben.

Last match was Louis vs Jonny. Last time they met, the first game went to 31-29! This match turned out to be just as close. It even completely cleared the bar with an audience that enjoyed the effort and skill that both players displayed. The quality of the squash was amazing. Jonny is playing the squash of his life. His front-game is so tight and his movement and retrieval is brilliant. Louis went 1-0 up and 2-1 up. It was so close in the 4th and Jonny used all his experience and skill to nick it. In the 5th, Jonny powered on and took a great victory. This is only Louis’ 2nd match back after a 5 week injury break, so although very tough, he was pleased he could compete at this level. Brilliant squash from Jonny.

Congratulations to Falmouth on a great win. Some really good matches played this evening.

Administrator Notes

Notes:Great to read how good an evening it was with some fine performances by the youngsters. Trounced or losing by a narrow margin these experiences on crt against more experienced players will prove valuable as the boys grow and strengthen into excellent squash players. Louis is short on appearances this half but acquitted himself very well against Jonny who currently is the strongest #1! Owen at 2-1 up showed how much he is improving and Callum and Ollie will be delighted with their haul of points against two strong players in Matt and Martin respectively. In all a good night for the in-form Falmouth who look currently like the only side capable of catching former champions TR3. I’m very glad Ben turned out for his home side and it’s always great to see him back in Cornwall. Tim S will be delighted with the youngsters. Truro School really have a great chance to go one step further this year and lift the national title. Fingers crossed! I’ll also be very interested to see how well our county U17 do in the All England ICC this year. Let’s hope Jack and Ben return next week. Thank you for a great report, Alan.
