Report: | Tonight's visitors to the Den where Truro 1, capping off the halfway point of the autumn season.
First on was Mike on his return to 1st team action against NewAmeriCornish Dion. Mike storming to a first game lead, although Dion's great racket control was there to see from the start, and sure enough made use of this to come back to 1-1.
Mike however was not willing to mark his return to first team action at the Den end with a loss, and retook control of the matching closing it out 3_1.
A great performance from Mike and a good game to watch, more crucially, 3points.
Taking to the courts next was Matt against Counter Jr.
Both coming straight out the blocks with some hard hitting mixed with some great volley drops from Matt, catching Zef a bit short Matt nicked the 1st and set a precedent for the game.
With Matts early takes catching Zef out, he stormed to a 6-1 lead in the second, unitil Zef changed up his game and took the next 8 points, and eventually levelling up at 1-1.
The next two games was much of the same, with some great rallies and retrievals from both. Zef taking the W. Great game to watch guys.
Next up was Rhys against the crafty Counter Senior. This was Rhys's first en 'counter' with Neil, familiar comments after of "he kept getting the ball back" and "I didn't expect him to play that from there" which the rest of the county will have experienced at some point.
However a dominant performance from Neil to take the W 3-0.
The final game was between myself and George, I have never taken more than a game of George so it felt great to get the 1st, it was a close game with some hard hitting mixed with some early taking to create some enjoyable rallies.
The second saw George come back to level things up again, then going on to win the 3rd.
Then I thought S**t, I love a 5 setter so why don't I have another one of those! yep, 4 out of 6 matches going to 5 now.
But, yet again staying true to form losing out in the critical 5th to George. This is a tradition I have no intention on keeping going so watch out Newquay next week. A game where some more points could easily have come our way I was proud of the slayers tonight and the score does not do us justice.
A very enjoyable evening with TR1 with the usual Spoons food and beer. Look forward to the return leg at Truro HQ. |

Notes: | Great report Max and a good effort from the Slayers though I have to add that TR1 have finally woken up and our finding form. It was always going to be tough without the strength of Chris at #1 but Max managed another 3-2 and you’ve guessed it, got squeezed out in the 5th. Mike’s return to the top flight with a W over debutant Deon (he’ll be supporting the Boks on Saturday, by the way) will be just reward for stepping up to help the Slayers. Deon will improve at a good rate with quality matches like these under his belt - a good reserve for TR1. Did he wear that Chorley’s Bad Boys shirt from a few seasons ago - surely the best team shirt ever in Cornish circles! Advice to Rhys: we’ve all been there (me back in the day when the legs were better) with Crazy Counter and next time it may be just as bad! Currently the county’s top racket breakers. Now there’s a stat nobody else knew! Matt is obviously finding his feet in Cornish squash and evidently is a great find for the Slayers. |
