Report: | Firstly congratulations to Bude for winning the league and being worthy winners at that.
This was the last match of the season in division 2, the most competitive league that I have been involved in since I’ve been playing in the leagues (8 years?). With bottom beating top, there have been some very close matches. There have also been a significant increase in new match players. Fal3 have introduced 6 new players in the this half season alone, Bodmin have also introduced a number of players.
Gareth’s band of veterans (and Wayne) arrived at Western Terrace and proceeded to demonstrate some steady good quality squash. First up was Wayne vs Alan. This was an energetic affair, with determined play. Lots of running and rallying. Wayne has improved significantly in his debut season and managed to run a fit Alan into the ground. An impressive win for Wayne.
Next up, Tim vs myself (Huw), the first two games I managed to prevent Tim from playing his tight boast and drops, the third game they started and it ended up being a tricky game that I managed to get over the line. Then Clive vs Peter D Keam, a really competitive match, long rallies, Clive getting everything at the back of the court. Peter struggling to find winners. Could have gone either way before Pete managed to find his rhythm and won the fifth. Last on Gordon vs Alex, Alex and always puts in maximum effort, took the first game with ease before Gordon bounced back to get the second. Alex managed to up his game and bagged the win for the team.
Overall an enjoyable match with lots of rallying. All eight moved to the bar for the captains food choice of spicy sausage.

Notes: | Great report, Huw, and many thanks for your captaincy all season! Thanks also for blooding some new players which we are delighted to say has been a very positive plus in the leagues this year. I’m estimating we’ve grown the player base by 5-10%! Amazing! My fingers are crossed that you’ll enter three teams again for 19-20!
Onto the match. Quinny is improving fast for sure. He’s got youth and determination on his side! Alan was in it all the way though. Tim is tricky to play against with all those tight trickle boasts but looks like your fitness was the dominating factor in the W - well done.
Great to see Clive blasting his way back into the PZ team. Quite a player in his prime and all that cycling has kept him fit. Peter will have been tested for sure!
Gordon is of the same ilk! A county player back in the day he knows all four corners of a squash court and when fit is a tough competitor still. I would imagine Alex being too fit in the end - all that training!
That’s it then for this season, the final match! Like you say it’s been a great second half with all teams threatening the W even bottom v top. Alarming how home advantage counts so much with strongholds particularly at PZ and Bude! Rob’s charges deserve great credit and I think it wise that they have decided not to accept promotion! There’s a wide gap in standard and secondly, the botom two Fal1 and the Slayers are where they are mainly due to long term injuries to key players. So we go again in Sept. with the same line ups. Onto the cups now.... |
