Report: | Bude collected much needed points vs. Truro 5 tonight to keep some distance between them and Huw’s Falmouth 3 challenge. Truro could field only 3 players, which helped our cause, but this was by no means as one-sided as the score might suggest. Joe reckons he’s the oldest player in the county playing team squash but you would not have known it as he battled valiantly against the much-improved Ali at 3 before going down a fighting 3-0. I had embraced the trauma of clean living for over a week before my match with Ras, well aware of what he can do with a racquet. As a result, I managed to edge a slightly scrappy match, but have no doubt that revenge will be ruthlessly extacted before long. Highlight of the night was Tremaine vs. Seb. Not so long ago, this would have been like watching Scooby-Doo vs. Scrappy - lots of running around without much idea as to where. Not so tonight: the shots were tight, the tactics were - well, there were tactics - and yes, the court coverage was very impressive. I would have to say Seb was slightly faster, but Tremaine’s movement was more disciplined and he outlasted the teenager to clinch a well-deserved 3-1 win with his best squash so far this season. As a bonus feature, we also had Pete E running racketball tutorials on court 2, for which he was paid in beer and pizza! All in all, a very enjoyable night. |

Notes: | Thanks Rob for a kind report of TR5's feeble efforts up the Atlantic Highway at Bude Fortress! In truth we were blitzed but we've had plenty of experience of that this season! Our target was 6 pts but with only 3 able bodied players available from a squad of 11 (5 oldies injured, 1 other AWOL, 1 with incurable Budeitis!) it was a tall order! Ali is a much better player than his #58 Cornish ranking suggests but Joe gave a good account of himself often looking youthful in his movements and even managed a few deliberate nicks! He deserves much credit for turning out and saving the fixture. Ali's serving has really improved and he is surprisingly fit as confirmed by Pete who tried in vain to run his legs off at RB afterwards. Ras looked good at times but Rob was definitely in charge with those wristy returns we can only marvel at, and experience showed in the end. Ras will need to get back on crt soon if he's to win in our last two fixtures. Great win for Rob and most deserved! The best spectacle of the evening though was Tremaine v The Sebster which had long rallies, high pulse rates and red faces written all over it! Seb played almost perfectly in the 2nd to claim our only point of the evening but Tremaine always looked comfortable in the three he took! Seb's tin count was rather too high in the end! Great to see Tremaine (#31) getting back to something like his best form after his winter of globetrotting! Oh, and only Seb had a red face - ominous! A great evening on the famous Barrington Crt so thanks to the hosts and good luck with your last two away matches to try and clinch the Div2 title. Good luck to Fin with his GCSEs too! He is revising, isn't he? |
