Report: | Nice way to start 2019 by welcoming back our mates from Newquay! However, they didn't find too much New Year generosity from TR3 or much in the way of decent booze to drown their sorrows - no draught beer! The number 1's, Rory and Mark, started us off with their normal, quick-fire accurate games but Mark seemed to tire a bit quicker than normal. Rory was ultimately fitter and more accurate but I'm sure Mark will adjust quickly to Division 1 challenges. Next on were Jon and Carl who have done battle several times in recent years. Neither found the cold court to their liking and as a result weren't able to put on much of a show. One spectator after the match said it looked like two old boys playing having had a good Christmas and not having played for some time!! Anyway, Jon ultimately prevailed 3-1 in the 'old boys' section. Next on were Pete and Andy who produced the match of the evening. To say Andy is unorthodox is an understatement and he was able to bamboozle Pete with deft touches and several 'taxis'! In the end, I think a combination of Andy tiring and Pete getting to grips with his game saw Pete winning 15-6 in the 5th. Last on were Joel and Matt and no-one knew how to call this one, as Joel hadn't been on a court for 9 months! The joy of youth because Joel seemed just as quick, agile and accurate as normal and he even managed some backhand volley winners! Matt was definitely not on his game and Joel ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner. As always, a big thank you to Clare for the great food and sorry to Newquay for the lack of decent beer. However, it's good to have them back in Division 1 and win or lose, they're always good company. We'll look forward to seeing you in a few weeks on your 'tropical' courts, where you'll be looking for revenge! |

Notes: | Great report Jon and some good battles noted! I am delighted to see Joel back in team colours for the reigning champs! A classy player who might well be a deciding factor in TR3’s title aspirations! I expect Pete had to work hard for his 3-2 against Andy and what contrasting styles too! The smart money is on NQY2 but this victory is a statement of intention from the 4x winners in the last 5 years! Have they still got it, though? Time will tell...... |
