Report: | What a match! It's getting to squeaky bum time and this clash of the Titans certainly went beyond expectations! TR3 were without Rory and looking at the TR1 oppo, were fearful of a drubbing. There was plenty of negativity on the team Whatsapp prior to the match but the unnamed offenders will no doubt be fined, JW & PS!
First up were the number 1's, George v Joel and even though the latter only plays team matches, he put up a great display. It's got to be the longest 3-0 match, unofficially timed at 50 minutes, that any of us have seen for a while! Unexpectedly, George was the victor.
Next up was Captain Tim v Ras Madsen and the young man took the first game with some hard-hitting and well structured squash. It was clear to see how much Ras has improved in a short space of time. Tim took the 2nd game and a tight 3rd 15-13. Sadly, Ras then pulled out with painful knees which meant a win for Tim 3-1. We all hope it's a short setback for Ras and wish him well.
On 3rd were Pete Walks v Zef and I think we knew this could be a good one. Here's another young player who has greatly improved and I've watched Zef take some notable scalps this year. However, even though he'll be disappointed to have lost to the 'veteran' 1-3, he should take comfort in the fact that Walks played some of the best squash we've ever seen from him. And yes, he was properly SWEATING at the end!
Our last treat of the night was the clash between two masters of the game. Simmo, with the most amazing shot-making ability, locked horns with Neil 'how the hell did he get that back' Counter! It was a total clash of styles but a fantastic match and one we'll remember for a long time. Simmo had the ball under complete control and took a 2-0 lead and even Neil was amazed and complimentary at some of the shots that were played. However, Neil must take great credit for digging in and finally winning 15-12 in the 5th. As I said, what a match! This meant an 8-8 scoreline with TR3 sneaking the bonus points on countback but we'll take them!!
Thanks to Kerry for a great meal and thanks to TR1 for a superb match played in great spirit. It's so good to have rivals but also good friends. |

Notes: | This match had all the hallmarks of a great evening of competitive squash. I’ve heard so much about it through word of mouth and Jonno’s report is probably the best I’ve read in a long while. A clash of the titans indeed, or a near title decider put another way, this match had it all and certainly no-one could have predicted TR3 getting away with a W with Rory away on National Schools’ duty with Tim’s starlets from Truro School. Skywalker has to take the ‘hero’ award beating the unbeaten Zef and Neil has to take the ‘come back’ award clawing his way back from being smashed to bits in the first two (now where have I seen that before) by Super Simmo. Ras is a fine prospect so we’ll all hope he recovers well, especially me as I need him for Bude away on Thursday! Throw into that mix the longest 3 zip in Cornish history (well, guessing really!) and a good bit of banter I expect and you’ve got the perfect squash match. TR1 will regret Stevie D being out, for sure, but won’t be too disppointed given the wide gap of points there was before KO anyway. TR3 thoughts now will be on the Play-Off Final as barring a miracle no-one will catch them now. The NYGs are coming back to form too after doing the reverse of TR3 in the first half, treading water and resting, so that could be a cracker too! We really need to make that special. Venue and date to be decided soon. I’ll certainly give it max publicity and if at home the club should come up with a way of getting the public through the turnstiles! .....thank you Jon for the report and Kerry we love you! |
