Report: | First on were the #5s Jon Wills v Huw Gibbon. Jon outsmarted Huw for most of the encounter though the Falmouth skipper did have his chances and could have scored many more points with a little more care. Jon though has many years of experience and a good range of disguised shots in his armoury and didn't let Huw settle. Pete Walker, who many regard as Truro's 'Player of the Season', did the same only better against a very quick and determined Matt. The scoreline was an emphatic 3-0 in spite of the great rallying and this set up the next match as possibly the decider. George v Jonny was worth paying admission for and we all watched in almost disbelief as George clawed his way back from match ball at 14-10 to eventually win 16-14 and take the game and match 3-2. Jonny did everything to win and deserved it but wobbled at the final point. That was the Pawle Cup decided but the remaining two rubbers at #3 and #1 were far from dead! Tim did his usual by starting slowly from 2-0 down to fight his way back to level the game at 2-2. Martin then dug deep to take the fifth 15-8. Eagerly awaited by an appreciative crowd the #1s did much the same. Ben eventually cut out the unforced errors to dominate the T and set about power playing his way to a deserved 3-2 victory. Probably the closest Pawle Cup Final in many years and definitely one of the best on the eye - some fantastic rallies! It was so close in the end! Great sportsmanship throughout the afternoon! |
