Report

Report: After our away win at Foey some weeks ago Pz2 were confident that we could win again, probably 3-1. As it turned out it was the result that ‘could have been’ :-).

First match up was Jack Paull v Paul Mallett. In the previous encounter Jack had been in almost complete control but this time it was a much fitter Paul who played the best I have seen him play. Jack's running, straight drives and drops kept him in the game all the way, but Paul had some deadly lobs that were landing with great accuracy. Add to this his serve which gained many points off Jack, Paul’s typical half volley hits and making many shots that he didn’t last match meant it was 50:50 all the way.
First game saw jack squander a 12-10 lead to lose the first game before taking control and winning the next two. I was surprised how Paul kept going and when it went to a fifth it was anyone’s match. Paul went 14-13 up, match point saved, went 15-14 up, winning shot on and … Jack missed the ball completely, match point saved, Paul winning the game 17-15 and the match 3-2.

Well, that was a shock but Taron, who had won in Foey, was playing great squash. He went 14-10 up in the first game but then to 14-14 - Taron had game point at 15-14 but lost it 17-15. The second game went the same way - Taron 14-10 up but surely he would take this onewith four game points; no.. back to 14-14 and again Taron had another two game points at 15-14 and 16-15. No way - he lost it 18-16. We still thought this was Taron’s match to win BUT it was not to be, Matt winning 16-14 in the fifth.

Tim playing at 3, came on and gave Pz2 a much needed lift, playing his well versed boasts and drops against newcomer John, who ran valiantly through the match. Time dropped the second 15-12 but took his three games, to 7, 7, and 8. Now the game score was Foey with 7 and Pz2 with 5. We could still win if Gordon could take out his nemesis Mike Batte. Mike had beaten Gordon is recent league matches 3-1 and 3-1 but Gordon had some revenge in the county closed Plate quarter final winning 3-2.

Mike started the stronger taking the first game 15-10. In the second Gordon rallied and tried use his boasts to good advantage. Mike is very fast and has a great shot selection. Gordon went 13-11 up but lost it 15-13. The match was now Foey’s. Gordon went down 9-5 in the third but a string of winners saw him take the third 15-9. In the end though Mike’s greater power and pace was enough to keep Gordon at bay and was a worthy winner 3-1.
Match to Foey 10 games to 6 and a lovely 13 points to them. Well done, Foey, celebrated at The Fountain with Phil’s superb stew and dumplings.
