Report: | A night of 3-2s last night in Falmouth for FAL1 vs NQY1. Too many Matt's as well - we need some nicknames...
Up first was the 1st string head to head of Jonny vs Matt Harford (The Master). Jonny took the 1st game with some accurate power hitting but The Master fought back with some great deception and variation of pace. A few more straight drops in the games may have clinched it for the Fal no.1, but The Master dug in and took the victory 3-2.
Next up from the 3rd string match between young Oscar from Falmouth Uni and the experienced Darren. Again, Oscar came out of the blocks strong, with powerful drives on both sides of the court. However, Darren matched these with very accurate defense and took the first game with a tight 13-11. Oscar then got the measure in the next two with 11-5 wins. Darren didn't give up though and tactically changed his approach, which paid dividends. He took the next two games and the victory 3-2. Both played well and Oscar has taken away some learning points from the game. All good experiences.
Third to play was the 4th string match between Matt (The Medic) from Falmouth and Matt (Hot Wheels) from Newquay. They've had quite a few match-ups in the past, so know each other's games pretty well. It was a match of two half's, with some great winning shots and accuracy coupled with unforced errors and mid-court hitting. Just a bit more tightening up from both players (especially The Medic) would have probably seen a clearer win. But it turned out to be another 3-2 slog with Hot Wheels controlling the T and playing his infamous short game very well. Cries of 'Keep it off his racket' could be heard around Falmouth Town. Having gone 2-1 down, Hot Wheels came back and took the win 3-2. Not many can say they have gone the distance with The Medic and come out victorious.
So the score was 9-6 to Newquay going into the final match. Falmouth's captain Matt (Stoner) stepping up to 2nd string vs the former Cornwall County Champ from Newquay, Gavin Johnson. Stoner going in the slight underdog needed a 3-0 win to take the tie. The last match between the two went all of the way with Stoner taking the win, so it was a possibility, however an unlikely one. Stoner sprung into action, and took the first game 11-4, but Gavin was just warming up. He took the next two games and the Newquay match win. Stoner wasn't done however, and with support from the local crowd, he pulled the next two games out of the bag and took Falmouth's only win of the night 3-2.
Matt H 3 - 2 Jonny
Gavin 2 - 3 Stoner
Darren 3 - 2 Oscar
Matt W 3 - 2 Tambo
NQY1 14 - FAL1 9
Thanks to everyone who came down to support and to Dave in the bar for putting on the food. Looking forward to the return leg (hopefully in Newquay - exciting times!). |

Away Report: | 'A great but long evening in Falmouth! Great squash and laughs along the way!
A very even match that could have gone either way!
Rather than nicknames, I think everyone should change their name to Matt to make things easier' |
